Sealy. History. Heritage. And an undying dedication to helping the world sleep better.
Lie on any Sealy mattress and you channel a century and a quarter of mattress ingenuity. A journey that began in 1881 in the town of Sealy, Texas, when Daniel Haynes, cotton gin builder, filled a request for a cotton-filled mattress. And then another. And then another. His business grew exponentially, which led to more innovations and several patents. Among them, a machine that compressed cotton.
Fifteen years later, Haynes sold his patents to a Texas Company that retained the Sealy handle. Soon after, ad exec Earl Edwards penned the slogan "Sleeping on a Sealy is like sleeping on a cloud." And with that, Sealy mattresses were a national phenomenon. By 1920, Sealy had 23 licensed plants in many regions.
Even in the face of the Great Depression, they managed to not only stay afloat, but to introduce a new product–the Button-Free Innerspring.
The innovations didn’t end there. Sealy continued their quest for the world to sleep better for decades to come. Milestones include the introduction of the Sealy Posturepedic mattress. Being the first mattress company to display and advertise a king-sized bed. Creating an Orthopedic Advisory Board. Reinventing the innerspring coil and the box spring. Patenting a variety of groundbreaking technologies, including Posture Channels and Pressure Relief Inlays designed to relieve pressure points that cause tossing and turning. And the list continues to grow to this day. In late 1983, Sealy purchased the Stearns &am; Foster Company. True to the Sealy heritage, these mattresses redefined luxury and expressed a dedication to craftsmanship and intricate detail. Making it a perfect and sound addition to the Sealy family of beds.
Today the company owns and operates 25 bedding plants in the U.S. Three are dedicated to innerspring and foundation component parts and one is dedicated to producing its very own latex–another first in the mattress industry.
For three decades, Sealy has been number one in market share and unwavering in its vision to help the world sleep better. And through its design, manufacturing and leadership, Sealy is poised to continue its legacy for years to come.

Shifman - Handmade
The Shifman Difference can be seen in the quality of its handmade bedding. More than 50 highly-skilled craftspeople work together to make each mattress and boxspring by hand to ensure ultimate quality, durability and comfort. Unlike mass-produced brands, Shifman mattresses are truly hand-made as it takes up to twelve and a half hours to produce one Shifman mattress set.
Shifman’s exclusive Sanotuft technique produces a buttonless tuft eliminating shifting and bunching by interlocking all layers of the mattress securely in place. Shifman’s eight-way, hand-tied boxsprings are another example of true craftsmanship. The boxspring’s hourglass shaped upholstery coils are tied by hand, eight ways with Italian twine. This technique provides durability and greatly reduces the wear and tear on the mattress.
Tying each boxspring coil at eight different points ensures the coils respond independently to provide strong, flexible support. Additionally, these coils conform to the natural contours of the body maximizing comfort and absorbing the body’s weight for the ultimate sleeping experience.
Two-Sided
Shifman continues to be one of the only mattress manufacturers that has maintained its dedication to making two-sided mattresses. While most major manufacturers have changed to one-sided mattresses to save on costs, Shifman has refused to cut corners and continues to ensure the same level of comfort and durability on both sides of the mattress.
Two-sided mattresses can be flipped over time and, as a result, last at least two times as long and are more durable than one-sided mattresses providing more value to the customer. All of Shifman’s innerspring mattresses are two-sided because it’s better for the customer.
Luxurious Materials
Shifman uses the most luxurious materials available to make each of its elegant mattress sets. High-end Belgian damask and matelasse fabrics, as well as natural materials including cotton, wool, latex, cashmere and pashmina are incorporated into many Shifman designs.
Made in America
Deeply rooted in more than a century of tradition, Shifman maintains its heritage and continues to proudly handcraft its luxury mattresses at its facility in Newark, NJ.
